General EWU Information

International Field Studies (IFS)

The mission of Eastern Washington University's (EWU's) Field Studies is to provide students participating in inter-cultural exchanges with the opportunity to increase their understanding of unique people and places, develop confidence in themselves as world observers and gain an appreciation of higher education as an important partner in achieving future goals.

Working closely with educational travel program directors, Eastern Washington University has developed a series of courses corresponding with various travel itineraries. Courses have been designed to complement and enhance the educational value the student receives from the program.

IFS credits earned are university level, resident "quarter system" credits and will appear on an official EWU transcript. Credits earned are usually transferable to other colleges and universities. Since 1980, more than 45,000 credits have been transferred by Field Studies students to the college or university of their choice.

University Accreditation

EWU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities for the teaching of liberal arts and teacher education. It is approved by the U.S. Attorney General for non-quota immigrant students and is also on the approved list of the American Association of University Women.

The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Washington State Board of Education have accredited and fully approved Eastern's teacher education program.

Resident Credit

Field Studies courses offered at EWU are designated as quarter system resident credit courses. The courses are Undergraduate Affairs Council approved courses taught by in the academic departments of Art, Education, History, Social Studies and Journalism. The courses are open to enrollment by and graded in direct competition with regularly enrolled undergraduate students at the university. The courses are directed study courses and are repeatable if the student travels to a different region.
