Wilderness Survival

Wilderness Survival is now being offered by EWU's Continuing Education Department through the online course RCLS 315!

Overview

This course is for anyone who would like to learn specific survival techniques in case of an emergency in a remote natural environment. The curriculum includes technical information, research and hands-on utilization of survival techniques.

In addition to general skills and knowledge of survival concepts in the wilderness, students will learn:

  • Decision-making in emergency situations
  • How to handle survival stress
  • How to improvise essential equipment/shelter
  • Recognizing medical concerns
  • Outdoor hazards to anticipate
  • How to make a survival kit (specific list in syllabus)

Earn Credit

This course requires specific requirements to earn academic credit. These requirements are:

  1. Define wilderness survival terms
  2. Improvise a wilderness survival tool, equipment or firemaking system
  3. Research and Design a regional personal survival kit (PSK)
  4. Research and Design a survival kit for the Arctic, Desert or Jungle environment
  5. Summarize the primary chapters in the text dealing with wilderness survival
  6. Survival skills assessment: shelter, fire and signaling
  7. Design a detailed lesson plan on wilderness survival.

 

This is a 3 credit online course in wilderness survival. Hours with each requirement are to be arranged with the instructor, Dr. Paul Green.

Textbook

The textbook is Aviation Survival Handbook by ERI.
